A User-Friendly Installation
The Ubuntu installer is designed to be a straightforward, graphical guide that walks you through every step. Here is an overview of what to expect when you choose “Install Ubuntu.”
- Language and Keyboard: First, you will be asked to choose the language for the operating system and then select your keyboard layout.
- Updates and Software: On the next screen, you have a few choices:
- Normal vs. Minimal Installation: “Normal” includes a web browser, utilities, office software, and games, while “Minimal” just includes a web browser and basic utilities.
- Download updates while installing: This is recommended to save time after the installation is complete.
- Install third-party software: Check this box if you have hardware (like graphics cards or Wi-Fi adapters) that may need proprietary drivers to function correctly.
- Installation Type: This is the most critical step, as it will make changes that cannot be undone. You’ll be asked how you want to partition your disk. For a simple, clean installation on a new computer, the easiest option is “Erase disk and install Ubuntu”. The installer will show a final confirmation pop-up listing the changes before it modifies the disk.
- Location and User Info: While the system files are being copied in the background, the installer will ask you to set your time zone. Afterward, you will create your user account by providing your name, a computer name, a username, and a password.
- Installation Complete: Once everything is done, a message will appear stating “Installation has finished”. You will then need to click “Restart Now” to reboot your computer and start using your new Ubuntu system.
